A look at what we used to do
Drag Racing/Street Rod - A little blast from the past

My first Ford Pop at Santa Pod Raceway June 1981

Hot Rod & Custom Magazine September 1981
It's nice to see street rods on the strip
especially when they're laying down some rubber
This is real show 'n' go
Powered by Ford 4.7 litre small block V8
As the engine was going to take a lot of punishment,
I replaced and blueprinted most of the parts

TRW pistons, mild hydraulic cam, boss con rods, GT40
spec heads, mallory distributor, holley 600cfm carb plus
 home made headers

For the drive train, I used a Ford 4 speed top loader gearbox
with Jaguar S type independent rear suspension

Later replaced the body shell for a better one from an abandoned project
I sprayed it American red candy apple over a gold base

Eventually sold the second one to build a third

Bought the third one from a guy running a pub in London
Although the car had been standing for over a year, we primed the pump
cleaned the plugs and points and drove it back to Brighton

Waiting at a bus stop after attacking it with a blow torch. No road tax

Chassis built from 3x2 10g and aircraft tubing

 Front suspension is home grown.
 Eddie Wimble drop tube axle.
Radiator was later changed for a custom one
 to handle the heat

This is the 4.7 V8 engine I blueprinted from
my previous pop while working as a Jag
 mechanic at Moores of Brighton
Thanks must go to Pat Church of Gold Rush
fame for supplying parts and advise while
 running Brighton Speed & Custom

Although still a street car, I wanted the drag
race look at the time using 15" rear wheels
and 13" slimline fronts,  flip body.
Full roll cage, prop loop etc. to RAC specs

These were fantastic days and although I no longer race, the memories linger on
Nothing quite like the burble and acceleration of a well tuned V8, and out of all the exotic cars i've driven, nothing matches up to the fun, excitement and sheer buzz of drag racing, and the people that I shared these times with

Always glad to hear from anyone reading this page who knows what I mean or has a project of interest
